The City of Genova is a local authority. The challenges of the City is to build instruments and strategies for a different concept of local administration, focused on quality of development and economical revival. Genova is experimenting a new method of city government and governance through a creative exercise in steps, with new forms of social co-operation involving the whole community, with the idea of integrating public (local Institutions, all the authority levels) and private sectors for projects of economic, social and environmental transformation scheduled in the period from 2004 (when Genova has been the European Capital of Culture) to 2010. Social Affair and Health Policies Department is a big Department that includes all municipal services and activities that have an impact directly or indirectly on educational and social fields. City of Genova is actively involved in many research projects focused on education and solidarity, quality of life, economy and employment, communication and promotion of the City, Port and infrastructures, city management.

Genova, which forms the southern corner of the Milan-Turin-Genova industrial triangle of north-west Italy, is one of the country’s major economic centres. With a GDP of 15.08 billion Euros, or 1.3% of the national total, the city ranked fifth in Italy for economic strength in the year 2000: after Rome (6.45%), Milan (4.74%), Turin (2.19%) and Naples (1.51%), and ahead of Bologna (1.01%), Florence (1.00%) and Palermo 0.94%. Today a number of leading Italian companies are based in the city, including Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo STS, Piaggio, D'Appolonia and Edoardo Raffinerie Garrone. City of Genova is actively involved in many research projects focused on education and solidarity, quality of life, economy and employment, communication and promotion of the City, infrastructures, city management. City of Genova is a main partner of the Covenant of Mayors. The Covenant of Mayors is a commitment by signatory towns and cities to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency and cleaner energy production and use. Signatories of the Covenant of Mayors contribute to policy objectives through the implementation of their Sustainable Energy Action Plan.

Partner Role

The City of Genova, thanks to its expertise and skills will contribute to the overall action and especially to those that concern the Living Labs and pilot design and development, including contribution to requirement specification, design, testing/evaluation tasks. Correspondingly our contribution will be mainly focused on the task related to Living Labs and Co-creation and on the deployment of the pilots. The City of Genova will contribute to the project by providing the distributed technical infrastructures, supporting services to make a good performance and providing individuals, communities, SMEs, NGOs, etc. And will be and active partner in the dissemination task.
