Since this project was born in 1997 and opened his physical site ten years later on november 23th, Citilab has been promoting activities as a centre for civic innovation, spreading the Knowledge Society. Their methods of work are basically design thinking and user-centered creation. In Citilab, the Internet is considered a way to innovate more collaboratively integrating the citizen in the core process. Citilab - Cornellà.
Citilab-List of projects
As a civic laboratory, Citilab encompasses and develops different technology-based business projects with professional activities related to infrastructure, services and applications for collaboration. Involvement in Citilab projects works both ways. Therefore, you reap the benefits of an environment marked by collaboration and technological experimentation, increasing your capacity for innovation and allowing you to test your solutions in real contexts that make it possible to obtain more qualitative conclusions.
Center for Research and Innovation
The map of knowledge drawn from Citilab's various areas of research, which link innovation to elements such as the region, education, new social media, economic activity, and new user-based models of research and development, takes shape throughout the course of a project, rooted in a work-in-progress dynamic. In this model, the research and innovation groups are permanently connected to the processes of learning. This is known as the SED method (Seed-Evolve-Reseed) in which new knowledge and systems evolve from a few initial seeds, which in turn generate new foundations that allow for new challenges to arise. By advancing research and innovation side by side, a network of knowledge is created that benefits the entire population in terms of education, social integration, health, economic vigour, culture, equality, and quality of life. Coming out of the pedagogical experience accumulated since its beginnings, Citilab offers a brand-new way of getting involved in technology, a stimulating experience connecting with personal needs themselves and wherelearning goes on in group work.Outstanding projects participated by Citilab are Project Network, Hort Digital, co-working, Seniorlab, Lab RSI, LaborLab, Edulab, Social Media Lab, Knowledge Tourism and From Scratch.
The Digital Orchid is, for example, a project developed at Citilab-Cornellà with the support of the Fundación i2CAT. Its main goal is to help secondary school teachers use technology in their classrooms in an innovative way. The approach to the project seems a Living Lab for education; starting working on the secondary school level, but plan to expand into other levels and areas. The initiative is backed by the Departament d'Educació de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Department of Education of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia). Project hold in-person meetings every month, supported by a Ning-based social network where to interact, participate in discussions, help each other and work together. Project believes that this collaborative and social approach, based on an involved and handson community, will have a positive impact in terms of breaking down barriers between teachers and students, helping teachers take advantage of the possibilities offered by new (and “old”) technologies, and supporting the new policies implemented by both the regional and national government.
As a civic laboratory, Citilab encompasses and develops different technology-based business projects with professional activities related to infrastructure, services and applications for collaboration. Involvement in iCity project as a partner will be works to spread co-design methodology and share process and dynamization during the whole cycle-project into the different clusters (social services, health, mobility) for the international consortium. Therefore, iCity project can reap the benefits of an environment marked by collaboration and technological experimentation, increasing its capacity for innovation and allowing it to test its solutions in real contexts, by applied projects, with the different stakeholders involved (citizens, developers, governments) as co-creators, participants of an active community.
