Lamia is a city which dates back to antiquity, and is today the capital of the regional unit of Phthiotis and of the Central Greece region. The municipality of Lamia was formed at the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the following 5 former municipalities, that became municipal units:

·         Gorgopotamos

·         Lamía

·         Leianokladi

·         Pavliani

·         Ypati

One account says that the city was named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon, and queen of the Trachineans.
